NFL Construction is a proud father daughter team built on trust, family values, and a shared passion for quality craftsmanship. The partnership began when Helen welcomed her first baby and was looking for a flexible, part time role she could manage from home. It turned out to be the perfect match—Martin, was freed from paperwork duties and was able to focus fully on site, knowing the office was in capable hands. Today, what started as a practical arrangement has grown into a meaningful partnership. They love being able to chat daily, bounce ideas off each other, and work toward something that feels bigger than business—a legacy they’re building together.

I’m Martin, the proud owner of NFL Construction Ltd, and my journey in the building industry began at the age of 19 when I built my first shed.

I have always loved working with my hands, which is how I got into building. It took a short stint at Auckland Uni for me to fully realise that training to be a doctor wasn’t for me (who knows these things at the tender young age of 17).

Along with sheds, I built fences, decks, greenhouses, garden boxes and all manner of outdoor projects for my earliest clients. Mine was a fast learning curve because I ran my own small business that grew rapidly.

I was keen to get on with life so our children came along when I was only 23, which gave me an even greater need to build my business and earn an income. The opportunity to learn the craft of building from an experienced builder came along at the age of 24 when we built our first home.

In the early 2000’s we moved to the Gold Coast, and it prompted me to take a break from outdoor work, because of the heat of the summer sun. My time in Australia gave me time to learn a lot about myself, and I came back to NZ a much more patient person.

I chose to get back into building, getting involved in renovations, decks and all manner of interior and exterior building work. I grew my new business with a different outlook and understanding of the importance of working with my clients.

Thankfully I was older and wiser from my learnings about team dynamics and how to work with people. It really forged in me a strong desire to build a very different business and culture.

Once I allowed my creativity to shine through, I was able to give my clients advice about how to create their dream space. It is so fulfilling to be able to help with design and in particular, the practical aspects of design.

Since coming back to  Auckland, I’ve had the privilege of working on diverse projects across the North Shore, West Auckland, Eastern Suburbs, and Hibiscus Coast. Over the past 12 years, I’ve completed 35 projects, each one a testament to our commitment to excellence.

What sets NFL Construction apart is our dedication to building partnerships with our clients, consultants, and subcontractors. We believe that clear communication and collaboration are key to delivering the highest quality outcomes.

I understand that building your dream home or investment property is a significant journey, and I’m here to guide you through every step.

With our comprehensive systems in place, including fortnightly progress reports and quality control checklists, you can trust that your project is in capable hands.

I’m passionate about creating not just structures, but lasting relationships built on trust and respect. So, if you’re looking for a builder who genuinely cares about your vision and is committed to making it a reality, let’s connect. I’m excited to help you bring your dreams to life.

 Helen Urban - Administrative Manager

Helen has been involved in many of her Dad’s businesses over the years, and from a young age. It was here that a hard work ethic was established and she realised the importance of doing your best to support those around you.

This led to a career in film and television, where hard work is at the core of every production - but the hours are not conducive to raising a family. So the opportunity to collaborate in NFL Construction was too good to miss.

Helen enjoys the characters that you meet in the construction industry and the pride that comes with seeing a project come together from start to finish. She won’t be on site, but if it involves a spreadsheet, Helen has you covered.

HOW WE WORK WITH YOU

We follow a transparent, collaborative process designed to eliminate surprises, reduce stress, and ensure your new home is exactly what you envisioned—on time, and on budget.

1. Consultation

Every successful build starts with a solid understanding of your needs. In our initial meeting, we’ll sit down with you to discuss your goals, budget, timeline, and vision. This is your chance to share what matters most—whether it’s building that dream kitchen, creating space to grow a family, or simply building a home that reflects your lifestyle. We listen, ask the right questions, and offer guidance based on years of experience.

2. Concept & Design Phase

With your vision in mind, we collaborate with experienced designers and architects to create a concept that suits both your site and your budget. This phase is where ideas begin to take shape—with sketches, layouts, and creative solutions tailored to your property and the way you want to live. Importantly, we keep buildability and cost in mind right from the start, so you don’t waste time designing a home or alteration that’s out of reach. If you already have design plans - amazing. We go through them carefully with you and flag any areas that we see as being pertinent, tricky or potentially expensive.

At this stage we also create an estimated price for the project. That way we can see if the vision and the budget align, before embarking on a detailed quotation process

3. Preliminary Contract

Our preliminary agreement represents a mutual commitment to move forward together. It creates a clear intent to engage NFL Construction as your chosen builder and allows us to begin the detailed work of accurately pricing your project. This stage involves coordinating with our trusted suppliers and subcontractors to gather precise quotes and cost estimates.

4. Detailed Quoting

Once your plans are submitted for consent we can begin to focus on the pricing. We provide a comprehensive, line by line quote that breaks down every cost in plain language. You’ll know what you’re paying for—and why. It gives explanations of design elements that we have already consulted on - for example kitchen cabinetry - and explains the design style that pertains to that value, and where cost movement could occur if design decisions were to change. This ties in to identifying and explaining any potential variations upfront, so you’re not caught off guard later.

Our detailed quoting not only shows you the dollar figure for your build but also details:
Scope of works
Schedule of works
Payment schedule

The pricing process can take up to 5 weeks depending on the complexity of the plans.

At this stage we also outline which type of contract would be best suited to the project. This may be a fixed price, cost plus margin or a hybrid contract containing both fixed price and cost plus elements, depending on our discussions about the quote.

5. Signed Contract

Once you’re completely comfortable with the plans, pricing and style of contract, we move forward with the documentation. As New Zealand Certified Builder members, we use their contracts, which can also include their 10 year Halo Guarantee if you choose. Everything is documented, detailed, and crystal clear with no guesswork. Just peace of mind knowing exactly what’s included.

6. Build Begins

This is where the excitement builds—literally. Our trusted team gets to work, and you’ll stay fully informed throughout the process. Signing on to a build with NFL Construction gives you access to our build portal where you can receive your fortnightly updates, keep track of the schedule, access the plans, see photos and communicate with our team, so you’re never left wondering what’s happening on site. If variations pop up during the build process, they are identified, discussed, quoted and agreed upon before any work commences on them. We don’t want any surprises at invoicing time.

7. Payment Terms

Our payment frequency and terms are set out in the quote and contract and can vary according to the size of the project. These will be discussed at the meetings prior to contract signing.

8. Handover & Ongoing Support

When your project is ready, we’ll walk you through it to make sure everything is exactly as promised. But our relationship doesn’t end at handover. We provide ongoing support and stand by our workmanship long after the keys are in your hand. If you have questions or need assistance, we’re only ever a phone call or email away.
